About the Project

What this is and why it exists

For every high speed train journey in Germany and neighboring countries (ICE/IC) this website provides information regarding the side of the carriage recieving less sun / more shade. The website is updated each night with calculations for the following day.

Data Sources & Quality

The data for this website is sourced from gtfs.de. The naming of the individual trains differs from the official operator names, but the data is otherwise accurate. A train can still be easily identified by picking the station one departs from and look for a train that departs at the same time and has the same final stop as the one of interest.

How the Calculations Work

The calculation is rudimentary at the moment. For every pair of stations a train travels between the website calculates intermediate points and calculates the suns angle at the to,e tje carriages pass trough this point. For each point a scoring is is assigned based on the angle in which the sun hits the carriage. All scores are aggregated to provde an overall shade assesment for each journey between two stations. It is planned to improve the calculation in the future, by taking the carriages shape, the placement of the windows as well as the height of the sun above the horizon into account.
